The city is home to two of the most important shrines in Shia Islam: the Shrine of Imam Hussain (AS) and the Shrine of Hazrat Abbas (AS), his loyal half-brother.

History of Karbala

Karbala has been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence of settlement dating back to the Babylonian period. Its name is believed to be derived from the Aramaic word “Karbala,” meaning “sacred place.”
Battle of Karbala (680 CE / 61 AH)
The Battle of Karbala took place on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) in 680 CE. Imam Hussain (AS), accompanied by 72 companions, faced the army of Yazid I. Despite being vastly outnumbered, they stood firm in their commitment to justice and truth, and were martyred.
This event is a cornerstone of Islamic history, symbolizing the eternal struggle between righteousness and tyranny.
